We've updated how Custom Learning Path progress is calculated and displayed. This article explains what changed, how the new calculation works, and what to expect.
What changed at a glance
Custom Learning Path progress now counts every item in the path equally - whether the item is a module, a lab, or an assessment. Previously, progress was based on the total number of pages and flags across the whole path, which meant content-heavy items dominated the percentage and assessments were not counted at all.
The Total Progress bar on the Custom Learning Path page is now segmented to show completed, in-progress, and not-started items at a glance.
How the new calculation works
Each item in a path is worth an equal share of the total. A path with 8 items means each item is worth 12.5% of overall completion.
The headline percentage reflects completed items only. For example, completing 2 of 8 items shows 25% Total Progress.
- Completed (green): items the learner has fully finished.
- In progress (purple): items the learner has started but not yet completed. These are shown on the bar but do not count toward the completed percentage.
- Not started (gray): items the learner has not opened.
Hovering over the progress bar shows the full breakdown - the number and percentage of items completed, in progress, and not started. Admins can drill down into the report to see the exact completion percentage within each individual item.
Example
A learner is assigned an 8-item path. They have fully completed 2 items and have started, but not finished, 3 more.
- Total Progress: 25% (2 of 8 items completed)
- In progress: 3 of 8 items (38%)
- Not started: 3 of 8 items (38%)
The 3 in-progress items appear in purple on the bar so admins can see momentum, but they are not included in the 25% headline figure until they are completed.
What has not changed
The way completion is calculated within an individual item is unchanged:
- A module’s completion is still based on the number of pages, videos, and flags completed.
- A lab’s completion is still based on the number of flags completed.
- An assessment’s completion follows its own completion criteria.
Only the path-level total has changed - how those items roll up into the overall path percentage.
Why your existing progress percentages may have changed
Because the calculation method is different, paths that were assigned before this update may now display a different percentage than they did previously. This is expected and does not mean any learner progress was lost.
For instance, on a path with one module and one lab, completing the module now shows 50% path completion (1 of 2 items) rather than a figure weighted by page count.
Frequently asked questions
Did any learner progress get reset?
No. All completion data is preserved. Only the way it is totaled at the path level has changed.
Why doesn’t an in-progress item count toward the percentage?
The headline number represents fully completed items so it stays clear and unambiguous. In-progress items are still visible - they appear in purple on the bar, and you can drill down to see exactly how far along each one is.
Are assessments now included?
Yes. Assessments are counted as equal items in the path, which was not the case under the previous calculation.
How is completion within a single item calculated?
That logic is unchanged: modules are measured by pages completed and labs by flags completed.
